Dealing with death is never a one-size-fits-all grieving process. As a comedian what else can he do but take it on stage and laugh? Ed Byrne explains why and how his younger brother Paul Byrne died through his side-splitting show Tragedy Plus Time.
Where better to bring his brother to life than at the Edinburgh Fringe where Paul worked as a stage director and helped many other comedians bring their work to the stage.
Explaining how Paul died of liver failure (due to a large amount of user error) ie heavy drinker. Their relationship was turbulent at times and they spent too long not speaking to each other in the two years before he died, which Byrne regrets. Covid is the final factor and he makes a valid swipe at the partying Tories during that time.
Who knew calories had to be added to cooking? His ex-friend does. Just one of the many things the friend believes to be a conspiracy and Byrne has reached the point in life where he is no longer interested in entertaining those conversations.
At 51 he doesn’t take kindly to being called “spritely” Mind you being a year older I don’t care much for the description either. Byrne is comedy gold, stories of family life and his recent ADHD diagnosis explained his ability to make a bad situation worse but putting his foot in it.
Move over Michael Mcintyre and James Corden it’s time to let Ed Byrne onto the Royal list for Wimbledon box seats, his wife would be ecstatic. It appears we share similar opinions on certain comedians although Byrne has a better comedy delivery than me in voicing them!
With a love of comedy, it seems cruel that Paul wasn’t there to enjoy the show too.
