Wasteman a beautifully presented semi-biographical play by Joe Leather taken from his experiences as a bin person during the dark days of lockdown. The act started life on Zoom during the Pandemic and has now transferred successfully to the stage.
Tackling prejudices and homophobia head-on with an honest look at how he hid his true identity in a strong heterosexual environment in fear of what might happen (not what did). If fellow workers had found out about the fabulous act.
However, after entering the Miss Stoke Drag Queen competition hiding the identity became difficult. The reactions received from people confirmed that choosing drag is a positive career choice, and here we are.
Leather is open and honest about his fears and insecurities surrounding his desire to perform in drag and why he was held back. Upon watching the show Leather had no reason to be wary the performance is superb with gorgeous outfits and wigs. I always envy how brilliantly drag artists can apply makeup.
Struck down just before the Fringe with a back problem it was touch and go as to whether Wasteman could continue. The wonders performed in the NHS allowed this show to go on. Take a moment to imagine how wonderful the shoes would have looked.
