What happens when you sell parts of yourself to an unknown entity in order to maintain an unaffordable lifestyle The Society of New Cuisine explores the depths of mental illness, desperation and unhealthy relationships.

The solo performance by Chris Fung is superbly delivered using the entire stage through a physical and emotional rollercoaster. Each twist and turn the character’s life took is performed with precise consideration, never a step or line out of place.

Beth was the love of his life. Breaking up with her completely devastated every inch of his body. The recovery takes two years before he encounters Sylvie, the unattainable beautiful woman who appeared to be out of reach until she approached him and sparks lit up.

However, is Sylvie a reality or part of something more sinister and beguiling? Her high-maintenance lifestyle and unrealistic expectations should have been the “red flags” he needed to have walked away from! Where she comes from or what she is trying to achieve is never explored and never required explanation as her mystery adds to the depth of the play.

Selling your blood for one thousand pounds per visit without questioning where it is going or what it is for highlights the state of mind he is in by the time it’s too late to walk away. Higher staked passive-aggressive demands are placed upon him leading to an unexplained climax.

I found there were several elements of surrealism in play that I have read in the Brett Easton Ellis novel American Psycho where the money leads to obscene, erratic behaviour and relationships that quickly become toxic minefields.

A clever, dark and fascinating play performed by a first-class actor who will take you on a journey unlike any other, which will leave you questioning where you have been.
