Every year the Fringe has one performance that remains in your memory long after everything has finished and become a distant memory, AUTO-ENGRAIN A One Woman Show this year will be one of those plays for 2023 that will stay in memory.
Helena Collins O’Connor’s delivery offers a true-life uncomfortable reality into the drip feeding level of abuse that a violent narcissistic manipulator subjects their victims to. Nothing they say or do is without a test or trick behind it to draw you in to an unsafe situation.
One line hit hard “You can’t break up with…” them. It sounds to the outside world a ridiculous statement. Of course you can, you just finish it. Narcissists don’t respect or listen to the word no and have zero concept of respecting boundaries. They keep turning up and calling you normal trapping you and making it impossible.
It’s a story that deserves to be heard and the charge rates against perpetrators is incredibly low against the high rates of domestic abuse reported and suffered by millions of victims every single minute of the day. Christmas and holidays see a sharp rise in cases.
Every verbatim word is a stark reminder of the predominantly unseen abuse that takes place in private the victim is accused of overreacting, causing drama or it was just a joke! O’Connor’s writing and delivery are horrifyingly accurate right down to the reams of paperwork faced at the end in the police station once the decision is taken to report.
Please be aware of the red flags and triggers. Honestly no matter how shocking the storyline is this needs to be seen and heard. Potentially allowing future victims to recognise those bright and bold “red flags”.
If you are suffering at the hands of a perpetrator please report them, get out, get help and stay safe. Your life and well-being is the most important gift you can give yourself. Below is a range of websites where help and support can be found.
Five Stars.
