Edgar Allan Poe:The Murders in the Rue Morgue is pitched towards an afternoon audience including younger audience members this adaptation of Poe isn’t as dark and horrifying as I have seen. However, it still brings the story to life with grim accounts and descriptions of what the Police discover.

Two women are murdered in their homes, with no apparent motive or entry. Police Officer Dupin is on the case and is baffled as to how these murders happened. Could it lead to an innocent person being charged?

The murders are described in a fair amount of detail and there was a gasp in the audience near me when the police officer described the “head falling off” one of the victims and the creaking windows helped suspend your disbelief that the windows were being examined.

I was suitably impressed with the period costumes worn by both of the cast. Placing the play in its historical context and imagining the scenes and slum conditions of the 1800s that the pair would have been working in.

Poe created the first short story whodunit with macabre descriptions of the events that take place. A gritty Gothic horror writer that will often leave you on the edge of your seat and haunted by what has just taken place.
