Up and coming ventriloquist LGBTQ performer Lachlan Werner brings Voices of Evil to the Edinburgh Fringe. After watching his taster performance in the 2022 LGBTQ Comedian of the Year competition I have been keen to catch a full performance. I certainly wasn’t disappointed.
Werner’s performance offers a fun and energetic hour of perfect Fringe entertainment, with plenty of help from the ventriloquist Witch, Lady of Shadows. Who loving refers to Lachlan as her “own little poofter and she loves him”. She helps Werner build up his confidence to tackle the imminent demons.
The couple have a close connection throughout the act and you can tell Werner has considered each move and line used throughout the performance to evoke reactions from the audience. Devising and delivering an “off the wall” performance.
Everyone knows the hidden trick behind ventriloquists, which is to never see their mouth move. Lachlan’s perfected the art form with precision and there’s not a single mouth movement spotted throughout the performance no matter how chaotic the situation becomes.
The production requires a few edits and tightening up in certain scenes. Although It’s rare to watch a Fringe production that doesn’t. Be careful what you take into the show as it might become a feature! There’s more to come from Werner in the future.
