Joseph Sansome takes to the stage for one night only in the Adelphi Theatre, home to the West End hit Back to the Future. Bringing life to a range of the late George Michael’s music hits in the touring production of Fast Love. The audience members at tonight’s performance were certainly ready to party.

Sansome is almost pitch-perfect to the late star’s voice. Modelling himself loosely on Michael with neatly trimmed facial hair and dressed in some of the iconic attire worn by George. However, Sansome isn’t a performer and at times looked lost during instrumental sections and just span on the central stool. However, this didn’t stop the audience from enjoying and savouring every moment of his performance.

The Adelphi Theatre is a nice smaller West End venue but it didn’t feel like the right space for this production. A dancing area or a venue with wider seating would allow the audience members to enjoy the experience and be able to express themselves as they bask in the music.

I found the lighting at times blinded me with various flashes. With the stage backdrop constantly in motion with various background scenes, especially the iconic Los Angeles scene with the helicopter circling the city in the music video for Outside. There was always something taking place behind accompanying the music set.

The accompanying band is introduced in the second half. With an impressive saxophone solo by Jarlath Mulholland. Backing vocalist Carol Riley gave an outstanding duet performance in the role of Aretha Franklin in I Knew you were waiting. Riley’s powerful vocals were extremely moving.

For fans of the late George Michael and those who enjoy great music, this is one to watch. Keeping the memory alive of a fantastic musician who gave so much to his fans, and the unknown depth of his private generosity which we only learned about after his death.
